I thought about asking him if he was okay, but I didn’t want to be a bother to him. I didn’t want to look as desperate as he made me feel. Still, I was worried about him. He seemed so different and so aggressive. I could tell that emotionally he was as shaky as me and it only made me want to curl up with him more.

Soon, he disappeared back into the wheelhouse, and I busied myself back with my reading. The magazine wasn’t holding my attention, much, though, so I sat it down and leaned back, hoping to catch some sun while I took a short nap. There was a tense vibe on the deck, though, and this gave way to my people watching.

I noticed that it wasn’t just Kevin that seemed on edge. Nearly everyone was struggling to maintain positivity. Rufus was quietly re-stocking the bar. His usual wide smile had faded. Smithy was setting up quietly for a diving lesson. Owen had his head down, hard at work cleaning the deck. Matteo was sweeping the mess up around the kitchen.

And the girls were nowhere to be found. It struck me how odd it was that here, in the midst of the game, not a single one of my friends was with her target. What was going on?

Esme began to walk past me.

“Esme,” I said, catching her attention.

“Yes?” she asked. “Can I get you something?”

“No, no,” I shook my head. “I was just wondering if everything was okay. It’s eerie up here on the deck today. Are we heading for a storm or something?”

Esme cracked a funny smile.

“We’re in the middle of one,” she said, then turned and walked away.

At dinner, all my questions were answered.

“You have to do something about your man,” Jessie said, as she sat down. “I can’t get anywhere near Smithy without him screaming that Smithy needs to get to work. He actually had the audacity to tell me that there were a dozen fun things to do on this boat and that doing Smithy wasn’t in the brochure I looked at.”

I nearly choked on my wine.

“He said what?” I asked, as shocked as I was amused.

Niki, already seated beside me, nodded. “He acted about the same toward Rufus. He was nicer to me, though. I came down earlier to talk to Rufus and Kevin said that I needed to find something else to do today because Rufus had a lot going on he needed to take care of. Rufus seemed really confused by it, and then when I was walking away, I heard Kevin chewing him out about fraternizing with tourists.”

“Yep,” Heather said. “Matteo says he’s been a real dick all day and that I’d better lay low, myself.” She didn’t have to tell me about Matteo and Kevin not getting along. I was well aware and had seen it myself.

We all turned and looked at Sarah.

“He told Owen if he doesn’t quit chasing my skirt and get some work done, he'll be fired at the next port,” she said.
